Transport for NSW has approved the extension to the Rainbow Street Public School drop-off and pick up zone to increase safety and ease congestion.

Background

Last year we consulted on the proposed extension to the Rainbow Street Public School drop-off and pick-up zone.

On school days, the area is very busy in the mornings and afternoons. This causes congestion and safety concerns during drop-off and pick-up times.

To improve safety, the school and Randwick City Council have requested an extension of the existing drop-off and pick-up zone. We are also extending the no stopping area before the pedestrian crossing and the existing bus zone.

Consultation summary

We received a total of 24 submissions during the October 2022 consultation period. The feedback from the consultation was either supportive of the changes or raised other feedback within the local area.

Approved changes

To enable the Rainbow Street Public School pick-up and drop-off extension, the following changes will be made:

• Relocating the bus stop opposite Paton Street, 11m east towards Avoca Street.
• Converting 11m of the existing bus zone to no parking between 8am – 9.30am and 2.30 – 4pm on school days.
• Converting 35m of untimed parking on the northern side of Rainbow Street, towards Botany Street, to no parking between 8am – 9.30am and 2.30 – 4pm on school days.

To improve safety, we are also extending the no stopping area before the pedestrian crossing by 5m and extending the bus zone by 4m. This will enable the buses to pull in safely and ensures the bus zone complies with standards.

These changes will remove approximately eight (8) parking spaces during school drop off and pick up times, and two (2) untimed parking spaces.

Next steps

Work will take place between Monday 6 November and Monday 20 November, and will take one-to-two-night shifts to complete.

Construction work

For the safety of the workers and road users, some of this work will need to be completed outside of normal work hours.

Out of hours work will be between 7pm and 5am.

This work is not expected to be noisy, and the noisiest work will finish at midnight.

There may be lane closures and traffic changes. Please follow any signs and directions.
