Randwick Bus and Road Safety Improvements - Belmore Road and Avoca Street

To improve bus reliability, reduce congestion and improve safety in Randwick, we are proposing changes to bus zones and parking along Belmore Road and Avoca Street, as well as installing a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Belmore Road.

We have also worked with Randwick City Council on proposed changes to parking and loading zone times in the area.

We are now seeking community feedback on the proposed changes by Wednesday 18 December 2024

Belmore Road northbound

Changes to Bus Zone

  • extend peak hour bus zone times on weekdays from 7am-9am to 6am-10am
  • extend existing timed bus zone by 12m. This removes about two spaces during the morning peak

Changes to Loading Zones

  • the extra bus zone time, reduces the northern loading zone by one hour on weekdays:
  • from 9am-12.30pm to 10am-12:30pm
  • extend the northern loading zone times to include weekends from 8am-12.30pm
  • the southern loading zone remains the same

Changes to timed parking

  • timed parking reduced by approximately two spaces during morning peak, to allow for extended bus zone
  • about three 1/2P spaces changed to loading zone for 4.5 hrs on weekends
  • extend the timed 1/2-hour parking over the weekend from 8.30am - 6pm (Sat & Sun)

Belmore Road southbound

This proposal extends the existing bus zone on Belmore Road southbound by 18 metres and a further 60 metres during morning and afternoon peak periods.

  • This is a high frequency bus stop with services every 2-3 minutes during peak hours and over 3,500 daily customers transferring to Light Rail
  • It improves bus reliability and performance for passengers and improves safety for people getting on and off buses.
  • This provides space for multiple buses allowing them to pull in and out safely. It also improves traffic flow as less buses are waiting to pull in and blocking other lanes.
  • The proposal results in a reduction of three 1/2P parking spaces.
  • There is also a reduction of four 1/2P parking spaces during AM and PM peaks however parking outside of peak periods is maintained.

Avoca Street southbound

The proposal changes the 'no parking' to 'no stopping' as well as changing the 'no stopping' hours on weekdays to align with peak hours from

  • 7am- 9am to 6am-10am and
  • 4pm-6pm to 3pm-7pm

We are also proposing to extend the 1 hour timed parking to apply over the weekend.

  • This will help reduce congestion as two lanes of traffic can flow during peak improve
  • It will also improve network efficiency and bus reliability

To improve safety and pedestrian access we are planning to install a new signalised pedestrian crossing between Perouse Road and Cuthill Street
