Building on Central Station's heritage

Since 1855 and the opening of the first passenger rail line in NSW, Central has been part of Sydney’s story. The station has found a special place in the heart of all NSW residents, evolving and growing with the city it serves. Our challenge is to make sure the station’s heritage is reflected in an exciting future.

The original 1850’s station was located just south of the current Devonshire Street tunnel. The current main station building was built between 1901-1906, with the grand sandstone entrances being complemented with the iconic clock tower completed in 1921. The suburban electric platforms were built 1926-1932, and new platforms for the Eastern Suburbs railway completed in the 1970’s.

Tomorrow’s Sydney is being built, and Central Station will once again be at the heart of this change, with new Sydney Metro and light rail connections being delivered.
