Sydney Metro Enabling Work: Westmead and North Strathfield

Sydney Metro West

Transport for NSW is delivering improvements across the state to create vibrant, productive, liveable and sustainable places that support community health, safety and wellbeing.

Currently, Transport for NSW is carrying out Sydney Metro enabling work at several existing stations including Westmead and North Strathfield to prepare for the construction of Sydney Metro West. This work largely involves the relocation of existing utilities to clear the way for future construction.

Sydney Metro West will provide metro services to more communities by delivering a new underground railway to connect Greater Parramatta and the Sydney Central Business District (CBD). Westmead Station has been identified as a connection point to Sydney Trains T1 Western Line and North Strathfield Station as a connection point to Sydney Trains T9 Northern Line.

Westmead Station

Westmead metro station will be located on the eastern side of Hawkesbury Road, south of the existing Westmead Station.

Enabling work at Westmead includes:

  • relocation of existing utilities
  • relocation of overhead power lines within the rail corridor and along Alexandra Avenue
  • installation of temporary systems, equipment and customer facilities

North Strathfield Station

North Strathfield metro station will be adjacent to the existing North Strathfield Station. New metro platforms will sit alongside the existing station.

Enabling work at North Strathfield includes:

  • service investigation activities requiring excavation work
  • relocation of existing utilities
  • relocation of overhead power lines within the rail corridor and along Queen Street
  • installation of infrastructure supporting new over-head power lines
  • removal of redundant services and construction of new cable routes

To enable these construction activities to be undertaken safely, some temporary impacts to traffic and pedestrian movement on Queen Street, Gracemere Street and Parramatta Road will be required in 2022. More information will be provided to local residents closer to the date, and signage/traffic control will be installed to assist with these changes.

Minimising community impacts

We are committed to avoiding or minimising noise and vibration impacts across all construction projects.

We understand construction activities may cause disruption to our closest neighbours, and every effort will be made to minimise the impacts where possible, including:

  • Scheduling work during the day instead of at night where practicable
  • Turning off equipment when not in use and using non-tonal reversing alarms to reduce potential noise impacts to the surrounding community
  • Installing noise barriers to shield residents from high impact noise activities
  • Engaging with communities affected by our projects through the distribution of monthly notifications, including information regarding the noise impacts of our projects, mitigation measures and the provision of contact details to facilitate two-way communication
  • Conducting on-site monitoring to ensure compliance with strict environmental conditions relating to noise, vibration, and dust management.

We are committed to engaging with communities affected by our projects through effective consultation. If you have feedback on our mitigation measures, please get in touch.
