Mascot Power Supply Project

What are we doing at Mascot?

Transport for NSW is upgrading the power supply to support an increase to the number of services operating through the T8 Airport Line tunnel, and support the introduction of the new fleet of trains operating along the T8 Airport Rail Line.

Upgrades include:

  • construction of a new substation at 166 O’Riordan Street, Mascot
  • cabling route from the new substation to Mascot Station, which will be created using an underground tunnel boring machine
  • new lighting and CCTV and security fencing around the substation and the mobile antenna located behind the new substation.

Project update

Following the public consultation period on the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) in December 2019, the project has received planning approval. All submissions received have been responded to in the Determination Report which outlines the issues raised and conditions of approval to be adhered to by the project. We would like to thank the community for their feedback.

Early works commenced in October 2020, which included geotechnical, utility and survey investigations in the area to help inform the detailed design of the project.

Next steps

Early works will continue through late 2020, and the project team will begin the construction site set up for the substation and power cable route. This will enable the preparation for the tunnel boring machine, with an initial pit in the current substation site and a retrieval pit located on Bourke Street.

Every effort will be made to minimise any construction impacts on the local community and we will continue to keep the community informed about upcoming activities through regular updates.
