Wollongong Stabling Yard and Platform Extension Project
Transport for NSW acknowledges the Dharawal people as the traditional custodians of the Illawarra and pay our respect to Elders past and present.
What are we doing at Wollongong Station?
To contribute to an improved rail network Wollongong Station is being upgraded to accommodate the new intercity Mariyung Fleet. Changes area also being made to the stabling yard to accommodate additional trains as well as track work within the corridor to improve passenger and freight services.
Upgrades include:
- extension of both platforms by approximately nine metres at the southern end to accommodate the fleet of intercity trains and provide access for customers to all train carriages
- reconfiguration of the railway tracks between the station and stabling yard to support additional services and accommodate longer passenger and freight trains
- realigning and installing new overhead wiring and signalling equipment so the trains can operate safely and efficiently
- new staff walkways for drivers, cleaners and maintenance crews within the rail corridor
- improving safety on the platforms by upgrading lighting, closed circuit television, the passenger announcement systems, tactile paving and line marking as required by the platform extensions.
Planning approval
Planning approval for this project was granted in May 2020. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors report. All submissions received were addressed in the Determination Report which outlines the issues raised and the planning approval conditions to be adhered to by the project.
Project update
You will see an increased presence of workers on site as we construct two new train driver walkways, install new track and upgrade overhead wiring and signalling infrastructure.
Every effort will be made to minimise any construction impacts to the local community. Environmental assessments including noise modelling are undertaken in preparation for construction activities and we will contact those people directly impacted by this work.
We thank you for your patience while we carry out this important work that will transform the rail network.
