Transport for NSW has established a number of Smart Technology Programs to deliver the NSW Government commitment to reduce road congestion and improve road user experience across Greater Sydney and NSW regional centres. These programs will trial and deploy a range of innovative technology solutions to reduce congestion, simplify information for road users, enhance incident management and emergency response, and improve safety.
As part of this initiative, a Smart Signage trial was conducted in Chalmers Street, Surry Hills between Cleveland Street and Devonshire Street, starting on Monday 28 November 2022. The trial aimed to assess the potential benefits of new technology in improving kerbside customer information and reducing congestion in key traffic locations. A map of the Chalmers Street, Surry Hills trial location is provided below.
During the trial Smart Signage, powered by solar panels, replaced existing parking signs with one, easy to understand digital sign. The signs displayed current and upcoming parking restrictions, providing customers with simple, accurate, real-time information at busy kerbside locations.
Transport thanks the community for its feedback on the Smart Signage trial which has provided the project team with valuable insights.
The trial has now concluded and the smart signs will be removed from Chalmers Street, Surry Hills from 10 July 2023 and replaced with fixed parking signs. Parking restrictions and clearway use will remain the same.
