Program overview

Over the next ten years the More Trains, More Services program will simplify and modernise the rail network, creating turn up and go services for many customers. The next stage of work will deliver improvements to the T4 Illawarra, T8 Airport and South Coast lines.

What are we doing at Wollongong Station?

To contribute to an improved rail network Wollongong Station will be upgraded, including changes to the stabling yard for additional trains and track work within the corridor to improve passenger and freight services.

Upgrades include:

  • extension of both platforms by approximately nine metres at the southern end
  • reconfiguration of the railway tracks between the station and stabling yard
  • changes to overhead wiring, underground utilities and signals
  • new staff walkways for drivers, cleaners and maintenance crews within the rail corridor
  • new fencing and drainage work
  • improvements to lighting and closed circuit television systems.

Project update

Planning approval has been granted for this project. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors during consultation undertaken in September last year. Your feedback was considered in the planning approval process. All submissions received were addressed in the Determination Report which outlines the issues raised and the planning approval conditions to be adhered to by the project.

Construction update

As we approach the end of 2020, our site teams are continuing to work hard on completing some major construction milestones before taking a two-week break from Saturday 19 December 2020, returning Monday 4 January 2021. This past month we have received multiple deliveries of rail components, which will be installed in the corridor as part of the stabling yard upgrade.

During December, we will continue working to construct the new rail turnout from the materials delivered on site in November. A rail turnout raises the capacity of the rail system, allowing trains to move from one track to the other without interrupting the journey. This work will be completed inside the stabling yard before the remainder of track is installed over the second weekend in December.

We are continuing to deliver projects across NSW while ensuring the safety of all staff and the community. In line with current Australian Government guidelines around slowing the spread of Coronavirus and social distancing, all work will be carried out at a safe physical distance where possible and necessary hygiene practices will be observed.
